How to make a refund request

Refunds can be requested within 30 days from your original flight departure date by contacting Customer Care.

Refunds will be made in the currency and original form of payment used during your purchase. If you have made the purchase with Miles Plus Cash, any used portion of your prepaid extra baggage, if applicable, will be deducted from the amount paid in cash first. Any outstanding amount will then be deducted from the amount paid by miles*. The remaining amount for the unused portion will be refunded in miles and/or cash accordingly.

*Please note the amounts paid in cash and miles during the purchase will be allocated proportionately among all flight tickets and travel extras purchased within a single transaction.

    1. Subject to these terms and conditions, prepaid extra baggage allows passengers holding a ticket issued by Cathay Pacific (ticket number beginning with 160) for selected routes (with all flights in their booking marketed and operated by Cathay Pacific) to pre-pay for extra baggage allowance online, at a discounted rate from the standard extra baggage charges applied at the airport check-in counter.
    2. Prepaid extra baggage cannot be purchased for individual connecting flights, and must be purchased for each checked-in portion (i.e. the full one-way journey) of your booking.
    3. Purchases of prepaid extra baggage must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of the first flight of each checked-in portion of your booking.
    4. Any extra baggage allowance that has been prepaid for will be subject to certain baggage size and weight limits determined by Cathay Pacific. Cathay Pacific will not accept any baggage that exceeds the size and weight limits.
    5. Prepaid extra baggage is not available for the following booking/ticket types:
      • On hold bookings
      • Tickets for infants who do not occupy a seat
      • Tickets for extra seats booked for the same passenger
      • Group tickets
      • Industrial and agency discounted tickets
      • Tickets issued by other airlines
    6. Prepaid extra baggage will not be available during blackout periods. Certain blackout periods are applied on selected routes and travel periods.
    7. Passengers may not purchase prepaid extra baggage to pay for the charges associated with diplomatic bags.
    8. Where two or more passengers have booked together and they have paid for pooled or grouped prepaid extra baggage allowance, all members of the group are required to check in together to ensure acceptance of the prepaid extra baggage at the prepaid rate. Failure to do so may result in additional excess baggage charges being applied.
    9. Prepaid extra baggage is non-transferable. If a passenger decides to rebook the flight/date on the same route, prepaid extra baggage can be transferred to the new flight/date at least 24 hours prior to your new flight departure time. Prepaid extra baggage cannot be transferred to another origin, destination, booking, or passenger, and, if done so, will be treated as forfeited.
    10. In the event of involuntary flight changes, the prepaid extra baggage allowance will be transferred to the new flight operated by Cathay Pacific.
    11. Prepaid extra baggage is non-refundable except in the below scenarios. Cathay Pacific will issue a refund for the prepaid extra baggage charges if the extra baggage allowance is fully unutilised under the following conditions:
      • Flight is cancelled by Cathay Pacific.
      • Passenger upgrades to a higher cabin by using Asia Miles, bookable upgrade, or by paying the fare difference on the same route.
      • Passenger rebooks from Economy Light fares to Economy Essential fares or Economy Flex fares on the same route.
      • Passenger rebooks to another flight/date on the same route which falls within the blackout period.
      • Cathay Pacific rebooks the passenger onto a flight operated by another airline.
    12. To request a refund, passengers must contact Customer Care within 30 days from the original departure date of the flight for which the prepaid extra baggage was purchased.
    13. If Cathay Pacific determines that the passenger is eligible for a refund, such refund will only be made in the same amount originally charged, and in the original form of payment and currency used, at the time of purchase. If the purchase was made with Miles Plus Cash, any used portion of the prepaid extra baggage, if applicable, will be deducted from the amount that was paid in cash first. Any remaining amount due and owing for the used portion of the prepaid extra baggage that the cash portion did not satisfy in full will then be deducted from the amount that was redeemed in Miles (at the same rate of Miles used to redeem). The remaining amount of cash or Miles (as may be applicable) will be refunded accordingly. Any refunded Miles will be returned to your Cathay Membership Programme membership account. If you have purchased/redeemed for more than one prepaid extra baggage or prepaid extra baggage together with flight ticket or other services in a single transaction using Miles Plus Cash, the number of Miles and amount of cash used to pay/redeem such tickets, prepaid extra baggage and/or other services will be counted in proportion to the price of each ticket and travel extra purchased when Cathay Pacific makes the deductions and refunds.
“Miles Plus Cash” has the same meaning as ascribed to it in Cathay Pacific’s Online Booking/Mobile Booking terms and conditions.
    14. If you decide to cancel your booking or take less baggage than your prepaid extra baggage allowance, the unused portion is non-refundable and non-transferable.
    15. Upon check-in, if you exceed your total baggage allowance, including purchased prepaid extra baggage and original ticket allowance, the standard extra baggage charges will be collected at the airport check-in counter.
    16. Carriage of prepaid extra baggage is subject to Cathay Pacific conditions of carriage and carrier rules. Passengers are required to comply with Cathay Pacific’s restrictions on prohibited and unacceptable items.
    17. Cathay Pacific reserves the right to refuse carriage of baggage for any reason according to the baggage information of controlled and banned items. Any refusal by Cathay Pacific of baggage that has been prepaid will not entitle the passenger to any refunds.
    18. Prepaid extra baggage will whenever possible, be carried on the same aircraft as you, unless we decide for safety, security, or operational reasons to carry it on an alternative flight. If your prepaid extra baggage is carried on a subsequent flight, we will deliver it to you, unless applicable law requires you to be present for customs clearance.
    19. Amounts paid for extra baggage allowance are not eligible for earning Asia Miles.
    20. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Cathay Pacific reserves the right to change the eligible routes and/or flights for which passengers may prepay extra baggage and the prepaid extra baggage charges, and revise these terms and conditions at any time without notice.
    21. These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of Hong Kong. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these terms and conditions shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Hong Kong.
    22. In case of any discrepancies between the English version and any translated version of these terms and conditions, the English version shall prevail.
