NDSM Wharf
There's a reason courting couples and Amsterdam hipsters gather at the gentrified NDSM wharf. Idle through the old warehouses which are full of artists' studios to Cafe Nooderlicht, for a panoramic view of old Amsterdam and the best apple pie in town.
An elegant 50-hectare park laid out in the 1860s, today's Vondelpark incorporates outdoor leisure pursuits, old and new. There's a beautiful rose garden, an open-air theatre from June through August, lakes and children's playgrounds. Cafés and restaurants dot the grounds.
Pint-sized Cue is where Amsterdam locals come to clink cocktail glasses. And what cocktails! Try the unique rendition of a classic Long Island Iced Tea. If that doesn't suit your fancy, owner Johann is happy to whip up something bespoke to your tastes.
What do we really know about the Netherland's greatest cultural export? This well-curated museum provides the answers, with 200 paintings and 600 drawings by the celebrated Vincent Van Gogh, while exploring his influences and legacy.
Pack provisions and take to the water in a six or 20-person electric boat. Be sure to end up in the canal district at sunset, when the canal sides bustle and the waters are illuminated pale orange by the setting sun.
Van Harte occupies an august merchant building in the heart of Amsterdam's De 9 Straatjes shopping district. The fixed dinner menu is a knockout: three generous courses rustled from locally-sourced fare.
Founded in the 1800s by Jewish émigrés, this department store managed – against steep odds – to survive the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Today, 11 nationwide stores join this flagship on Dam Square.
