The collection is a celebration of Cathay’s legacy, inviting both older and younger generations of travellers to revisit our earliest milestones. Here, we look back at the era that inspired this retro collection.

It's the year 1970: Kai Tak Airport, precariously folded into Kowloon’s cityscape and surrounded by residential buildings, is still Hong Kong’s hub for air travel, and Cathay has just opened its first-ever lounge here for VIPs and Marco Polo Club members to wind down before their flight.

In that same year, we published the first edition of our inflight magazine, named Discovery.

Toward the end of the decade, we received our first Boeing 747-200, VR-HKG, which would help propel us forward as a global airline with a long-haul network. In the following years, our services would expand to destinations across land and sea, from Brisbane and San Francisco to Amsterdam and Paris.

It was in the ’90s that the iconic brushwing logo that’s since come to represent our brand was born, replacing the green-and-white-striped livery which used to adorn our planes.
