Do
Chicago River kayaking
Up until a decade ago, few would have considered kayaking on the Chicago River – an industrial waterway. Nowadays, kayak tour patrons populate the Main Branch to catch an unimpeded glimpse of the skyscrapers that line the river's banks.
A cavernous first-floor hall – with a children's centre and rotating temporary exhibitions – gives way to two floors of contemporary and modern works, including paintings by de Kooning, Matisse and Richter. The third-floor sculpture terrace leads visitors to Millennium Park via the sleek Nichols Bridgeway.
As Randolph Street makes its way west, it reaches a cluster of acclaimed restaurants such as chef Stephanie Izard's Girl & the Goat and chef Paul Kahan's Publican. Casual strollers can duck into a resto bar for a quick drink or perambulate around contemporary art galleries on Peoria Street and Washington Boulevard.
Location
700–1400 West Randolph Street
Drink
Scofflaw
This gin-focused bar has cocktails that range from classic to the meal-like. Its "Veranda Way" drink includes flavourful gin, fermented pineapple, Aperol, lime and cinnamon-infused ice. The spacious, relaxed surroundings lack the wait time of cramped cocktail bars.
The hallowed 119-year-old natural history museum is known for its Ancient Egypt collection, mammal dioramas and dinosaur displays – including the world's best-preserved T. Rex skeleton, "Sue". The newest exhibition features what staffers actually do in the 21st century in their conservation efforts, whether it involves descending from helicopters into Peruvian forests, or prairie restoration.
