    1. Chongqing, Chinese Mainland

Often overlooked in favour of the Chinese Mainland’s big-ticket destinations, the megacity of Chongqing is turning heads with its architectural marvels, bubbling hotpot restaurants and scenic setting. And thanks to China’s 10-day visa-free policy, exploring the country’s most-populated city has never been easier. Get the lay of the land with a new helicopter tour over both the city skyline and the mighty Yangtze River, then dive into the city’s past at the new Chongqing Industrial Museum, located in a former steel factory. When it comes to the plushest beds, the eight-tower Raffles City Chongqing stands proud with its formidable futuristic architecture – complete with a 300-metre sky bridge floating above the city. If you prefer your feet firmly on the ground, check out the New World Chongqing Hotel on the banks of the serene Yuhu Lake.

When to go: spring or autumn offer the best climate.

    2. Madrid, Spain

Madrid’s vibrant culinary scene isn’t slowing down, with new restaurants popping up continually. While DiverXO remains the Spanish capital’s only three-Michelin-starred spot, sister venue RavioXO , the latest venture from chef Dabiz Muñoz, offers fresh fusion cuisine. Over at Rhudo , chef Paco Roncero’s avant-garde Mediterranean fare is as imaginative as the decor. New hotels are rushing in – such as the Nobu Hotel Madrid, set to open in 2025 – and the city's cultural calendar is buzzing. March will see top contemporary art fair Arco Madrid roll around, while Mad Cool Festival , one of the world’s largest music events, lands in July.

When to go: enjoy mild weather in the spring.

Foodies should also take note of hot new openings including Papa’s , an exclusive 12-seater venture from Eleven Madison Park alum Hussain Shahzad, or head to Bastian at the Top , a maximalist, 48th-floor restaurant serving modern Indian fare in a whimsical, cavernous setting.

Just beyond downtown, Deep Ellum’s music scene remains as happening as ever, and carnivores can’t pass up the award-winning barbecue at Pecan Lodge . Shoppers should head to Bishop Arts District for indie boutiques and vintage finds, including leather cowboy boots at Dolly on Bishop.

The new Riyadh Metro is expected to open, making it easier to navigate the city, while the world’s largest urban park, King Salman Park, is on track to debut by the end of the year. The world’s fastest, highest and longest rollercoaster, Falcon’s Flight, is set to open soon, one of 28 adrenaline-pumping attractions at the forthcoming Six Flags Qiddiya City . For a ride with less G-force, the new Dream of the Desert luxury train takes passengers on a two-day, 1,300km trip through the kingdom’s stunning desert landscapes.
