Hong Kong is home to some supremely talented musicians, and you’ll find many perfecting their craft with the city’s flagship orchestra. Concert tickets tend to go quickly, but you can get a head start on the 2023/24 concert season. This season is set to be the biggest one yet as the HK Phil celebrates 50 years of virtuosic music, and it will be the final season led by long time Music Director Jaap van Zweden.

Season Opening: Jaap & Joshua Bell
8-9 September 2023
The 50th season starts with aplomb, as world-famous violinist Joshua Bell is set to bring an Asia premiere of a thrilling suite of new works, followed by a rousing performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 4. The fresh compositions, originated and commissioned by Joshua Bell, are titled The Elements and will be brought to life by Bell and the HK Phil. Each movement is created by a different American composer and themed after a different aspect of nature. You’ll want to make your booking as soon as possible for this two-night spectacular, as tickets are sure to sell out quickly.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Sylvia Chang
3-4 November 2023
Love a bit of Shakespeare? Experience the bard as you never have before when actress, screenwriter and director Sylvia Chang performs A Midsummer Night’s Dream – playing all 14 of the roles herself. As she showcases her brilliant craft in this enchanting comedy adapted by Taiwanese writer Yuan-pu Chiao, she’ll be accompanied by the HK Phil, HK Phil Chorus and star sopranos Vivian Yau and Dani Zhang Jingdan, with a score that draws on Mendelssohn’s famed compositions.
Swire Denim Series: Hans Zimmer’s Greatest Hits
5-6 January 2024
Chances are, you love Hans Zimmer’s music and don’t even realise it. The movie composer has penned the scores to blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King and Inception. Skip Netflix for the evening and head instead to this concert of the German composer’s best tunes, brought to life in orchestral surround sound by the HK Phil and conductor Benjamin Northey. Later on in the season, the orchestra will also host a screening of BBC’s Seven Worlds One Planet accompanied by a live performance of its soundtrack – another grand suite co-composed by Zimmer.
Swire Maestro Series: Jaap & Alexandre Kantorow II

Joined by extraordinary French pianist Alexandre Kantorow, the HK Phil will deliver an evening of old and new that is sure to prove they’re one of the best orchestras in Asia. In addition to 19th-century classics from Beethoven and Mahler, the orchestra will be performing something never heard before. Composer Daniel Lo has been commissioned to create a brand new piece for HK Phil and the work will be making its world premiere at this concert.
Opera in Concert: Jaap | The Flying Dutchman

Whether operas are the highlight of your year or you’re just dipping your toes into the world of arias and recitatives, Wagner’s thrilling three-act masterpiece The Flying Dutchman should be at the top of your event list in 2024. With Jaap van Zweden at the helm, American musical heavyweights Brian Mulligan and Jennifer Holloway will lead the cast in this classic tale of a haunted ship. Wagner’s score roars with the sound of the unforgiving ocean as the ship’s doomed captain sails the seven seas to seek the remedy for his curse: true love.
Season Finale: Tarmo Peltokoski and Seong-Jin Cho
5-6 July 2024
To ensure the HK Phil ends their 50th season with a bang, they’ve enlisted the talents of Tarmo Peltokoski – one of the world’s youngest acclaimed conductors. Peltokoski will also be accompanied by pianist Seong-Jin Cho, and the duo will lead the orchestra in performances of Prokofiev’s technically challenging Piano Concerto no. 2 in G minor, all before concluding with Peltokoski conducting Mahler’s Symphony no. 5.
