Soak up iconic sights
Hong Kong’s city skyline is world famous, and it’s easy to see why. Take it in from the decks of the historic Star Ferry, or ascend The Peak for sweeping views from above. For another incredible outlook, ride the Ngong Ping cable car to Tian Tan Buddha. Back on the city streets, join locals at Hong Kong’s historic temples (Man Mo, Wong Tai Sing), bustling street markets and thriving arts and culture hubs (Tai Kwun, PMQ). There’s plenty to keep children entertained too, with theme parks (Disneyland, Ocean Park), beaches and more for families to explore.
Sample local cuisine
There's no doubt that Hong Kong is a culinary capital. Foodies will love feasting on traditional Cantonese cuisine: tuck into tasty tidbits at a bustling dim sum joint, and seek out the few remaining dai pai dongs (open-air food stalls) slinging wonders from the roaring wok. Don’t miss a visit to a cha chaan teng (tea cafe), where East-meets-West dishes nod to the region’s colonial past. Beyond the local, trendy fusion eateries are pumping every night of the week, while world-class, Michelin-starred restaurants offer gastronomic journeys through Asia, Europe and beyond.
Shop 'til you drop
Hong Kong has long been known as a shopper's paradise. International luxury brands can be found in the many malls dotting the city, while local designers sell their wares at independent stores hidden down laneways or inside unassuming buildings. You can’t miss a visit to one of the city’s bustling open-air markets: Cat Street for antiques, Stanley for seaside souvenirs, and Temple Street and Ladies’ markets for clothing, gadgetry and various knick-knacks. A visit to Kowloon’s flower, bird and goldfish markets provide plenty of photo opportunities, too.
Explore neighbourhoods
Just past the glistening skyscrapers, Hong Kong’s many charming neighbourhoods offer insight into local life. Take a stroll through Sai Ying Pun to discover dried seafood stores, artisan workshops and hip new bars. Tucked behind frantic Causeway Bay, Tai Hang has a distinctly village feel – its narrow streets are often traffic-free and brilliant to explore. By contrast, Sham Shui Po’s lively markets are the perfect place to pick up electronics, fashion, toys and DIY materials, not to mention sample some of Hong Kong’s best street food.
Go on jaw-dropping hikes
Covered in pristine countryside and mountains, surrounded by stunning coastline, Hong Kong offers abundant opportunities to get into nature. Hiking is a popular way to do so, with trails snaking through country parks, up vertiginous peaks, past quaint villages and finishing at sandy beaches. One of the city’s best hikes, Dragon’s Back, offers jaw-dropping vistas across southern Hong Kong island, while the MacLehose Trail challenges visitors to 100km through the picturesque countryside of Sai Kung and the New Territories.
Escape to an outlying island
Hong Kong's most popular outlying islands are just a ferry ride away from Central, offering scenic hikes, quaint villages and flip-fresh seafood. The region’s largest, Lantau, is home to iconic tourist sights, dramatic peaks and serene beaches. A laidback favourite, Lamma is best explored along the Family Trail and finished with a seafood feast at Sok Kwu Wan village. Cheung Chau hosts the quirky annual Bun Festival, and Peng Chau’s hiking trails, rustic temples and abandoned buildings make for a fun day of discovery.
