Sports equipment
If you need to travel with sports equipment like skis or a skateboard, please take note of our guidelines, which change depending on the route you fly.

Your sports equipment can be included as part of your checked baggage allowance.
The following items can be checked in as one ‘piece’ of baggage under your checked -baggage allowance.
- Any item of sports equipment, this includes personal portable equipment for golf, hockey, fishing, skiing, windsurfing, surfing, climbing and other related sports. Please note that the maximum accepted length for any item of sports equipment is 203cm to ensure that it can be safely loaded
- Suitably packed firearms (see requirements below)
- Pre-booked avalanche backpack (see requirements below)
- One suitably packed bicycle (see regulations below)
Standard weight limitations apply to each item.
Your sports equipment count towards your checked baggage allowance
When flying to most destinations, please follow our checked baggage guidance for weight and dimensions. If your kit exceeds these amounts, you will be charged for excess baggage.
Special rules and regulations
For some sports equipment, we have certain preparation requirementsbefore you bring them on board.
If you plan to travel with a bicycle, please contact Customer Care as far in advance as possible, but at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled departure. This is to confirm that your bicycle can be accepted in the aircraft assigned to your flight, as that space is very limited and is granted on a first-come-first-served basis. The bicycle can be included as part of your total checked baggage allowance as long as it meets the following requirements:
- A non-motorised touring or racing, single-seat bicycle
- Handlebars that are either fixed, tightened sideways, tightened parallel to the frame or enclosed in plastic foam or similar material
- Pedals have been either removed, fixed inwards or enclosed in plastic foam and similar material
- Deflated tyres
- Packed in a strong and protective hard case or recognised bicycle box. If departing from Madrid airport, there is a height restriction on the bicycle box of 100cm (39in) or lower
You may bring a rescue backpack as checked baggage or carry-on baggage. The backpack must be stowed in a way it will not be accidentally activated. The airbag within the backpack must be fitted with pressure relief valves.
Backpacks containing a cylinder of compressed gas (in division 2.2) may only be equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism that contains less than 200mg of Division 1.4S. Please present your data sheet at check-in.
Please note that the compressed gas cylinder must be carried in the corresponding avalanche rescue backpack, only one avalanche rescue backpack is allowed per passenger.
Sporting firearms consist of:
- one rifle case containing not more than two rifles, 5kg / 11 lb of ammunition, one shooting mat, noise suppressor and small rifle tools
- two shotguns and two shotgun cases
- one pistol case containing not more than five pistols, 5 kg / 11 lbs of ammunition, noise suppressors, one pistol telescope and small pistol tools
Under Laws of Hong Kong, owners of firearms and/or ammunition are required to obtain an import license in advance prior to landing in Hong Kong. Transiting passengers may be required to obtain a valid license, invitation letter or export permit from their departing country, and/or an import permit for the entry country. Passengers are advised to check official government websites of their departing and destination country for the latest information.
